Jumping on the Bandwagon

I've succumbed!!!

At work we decided to form a Farmer's Wife club (which will be starting in March for anyone around Highland, Utah who wants to join in the fun!)

Yesterday, I finalized my color scheme.  I bought 8 of these fabrics and pulled the rest from my stash/scrap jars.  I'm sure I'll have to pick up some more fabrics along the way though.  Especially some lights and darks (as you can see I've got lots of mediums).  My first inclination is to sash the whole thing in white with red posts but we'll see.

A red and white quilt has been on my quilting "bucket list" for a while now, so I decided to go this route for the FW club.  Although,  I do have another pattern that I've been planning to do in red and white, as well, so I may just end up with two.  Which makes me happy.

I can already tell that when doing a two color quilt you have to have lots of contrast.  I think this will be a great lesson in color value for me.  Which, I think will add another level of difficulty to this quilt.

Last night I made my first 5 blocks.  These little 6" cuties were fun to make and came together quite quickly.  In the club, we are starting with the most basic blocks and moving up to the more difficult ones.

#4 Basket Weave

#68 Postage Stamp

#2 Autumn Tints

#73 Rainbow Flowers

#48 Homeward Bound

I'm getting a little nervous for some of the more difficult ones, but I am happy anticipating how much I will grow as a quilter.

If you live around here and you're interested in joining the Farmer's Wife fun (and having a local support group :) then call Just Sew at 801-492-7929.  The cost of joining is $40, which covers the cost of the book, monthly block demonstrations, a show and tell party at the end of the year and the chance at winning a great (I mean GREAT) prize!

So am I the last Farmer's Wife quilter out there?

Happy Quilting!
~ Amber

I've started a red and white quilt and have been a little disappointed in how it's coming together....but your post made me realize I was lacking contrast. Thanks, thanks, thanks! I've only done a few blocks, so this project can be salvaged!

What a great idea; this will be beautiful!

EEEP! I just decided on Monday to start stashing red/white prints for the FW quilt! I hadn't seen anybody else doing it and I thought I was going to be original, LOL. :) I had forgotten about Bliss prints, will have to dig through my Bliss stash :)

No Gigi, you are not the last, VBG! My sister and I just started up on it because we live miles apart and thought we would have fun doing it together with a little friendly sister rivalry! I'm calling it the "Sisterhood of the Farmer's Wife Blocks" and I've starting posting step by step how I've been doing them on my blog, and I'm going to start rating them (easy-challenging) just for those beginner quilters who would like to do it, but don't know how... and, I may just be making a few little different projects along the way with the blocks... I look forward to watching your progress, and I love your colour choices, although you are definitely away ahead of us because we both lead busy lives and are aiming for just one block per Friday. Good Luck!

You're not the last Farmer's Wife quilter out there. ;) I am very intimidated by this quilt and not sure I will ever tackle it!

Your blocks are beautiful so far! I'm not sure I've seen a Farmer's Wife quilt that was all red and white. It will look great. :)

Don't worry, you're not last! Farmer's Wife is on my list of things to try - too bad I'm not in your area for the group.

This is going to be awesome, Amber. I love red and white quilts - I was thinking of doing Red and white for the Swoon-along - which is the only 'a-long' I've joined because of a full plate. And I haven't even started that one! For now I'm living vicariously through everyone else's Farmer's Wife blocks. :)

I bought that book from Just Sew at least a year ago. This quilt looks like such fun, I hope you'll keep showing the blocks as you complete them. Love the idea!

I live in Salt Lake so not far from you but am a beginning quilter. I could do the easy blocks but not sure If I could do the harder ones. What do you think?

I've got big plans for a red quilt too... this looks great! Beautiful job on these! (though even though I'm a farmer's wife, and am friends in real life with Amanda, who started all these shenanigans, I just can't bring myself to make the blocks). ;)

Oh how fun! I love seeing all the different versions and I don't think I've seen a r&w version yet!

I love that you are doing them in red and white too.

I love your blocks, I think red and white will be gorgeous. I got the book a few months ago, but I have to admit these little blocks are really intimidating me. :-(

I have about 10 blocks made and have stalled. I'll pick it up again soon I know. I love your reds and whites and it will make a beautiful quilt.

They look great in reds and white. I have the book but haven't started any yet. They are so tempting though, makes me want to try a block or two.

I love the look of the red and white. I think that is going to make a fabulous quilt. Good luck with the new farmer's wife club.

How very cute. I love your red and white combinations.
No you are not the last Farmer's Wife quilter. When I voted in November, the girls at the table were drooling over the book. I would like to join, but it is dependent upon when you meet. I tend my grandchildren and would have to work around the schedules of my daughters.

Oh my goodness...you are a genius...what a terrific idea to make your Farmer's Wife quilt red and white...I might have to make a third Farmer's Wife quilt to do this! Love your blocks!

Kim said...

Nope--not the last farmer's wife..I have yet to really look at this quilt! LOL I have seen enough people posting about their progress on their blogs to know there are some really doozies in it! Maybe after I get a couple more quilts under my belt I will give it a try. I LOVE the red and white approach!

Love this in red and white! Too late for me to change now....

I'm on the bandwagon too for this quilt...only I'm going way old school and hand piecing and quilting the entire thing. Yes I know it, I'm crazy. But its on my bucket list. :)
